ARTIST STATEMENT

My interest as a maker and mover lies in my fragmented remembrances of my own lived experiences, both on a personal and public level, and this influences all that I create. I want my dances to fill the gaps between performer and viewer, creating a space that allows all parties to offer something of themselves, even if this means offering just to listen. This feels like it is where the work really happens. I hope each time I create, that I learn more about myself as a human; I always do. I perform with the hope that the audience can do this also. I choose dance because it's vibrations feel necessary and limitless at all times, but especially in times where logic and reason feel futile.

I grew up as a serious athlete who also danced. But a creative fire inside me drove a larger desire to get to know dance deeper. I work as a freelance dance artist with equal emphasis on performance and choreography/design, and create works for both traditional and non-traditional spaces. I am often inspired by film, color, the mountains, outer space, architecture, our memory, public transit, home videos, and gardening. My recent work revolves around themes of far away memories, and my own personal womanhood (how to occupy a body that is both a target and a weapon).

I am interested in the oddities of architectural relationship, color, and gesture. I find that these heavily impact the aesthetics and visuals of my work in each instant of dance, design, and other. My physical and ephemeral relationship with nature is an important and nostalgic source of inspiration that is embedded in nearly all of the art I create. How does a separate universe of life live and operate beneath and around the ground we exist on, and how do we relate to it. Harnessing endorphins and emotions released from relating with the outside world changes the way my body moves. Encouraging an open pathway of communication between my quotidian self and the creature I am changes the way my mind and body work together. How can my limbs breathe and grow like sprouts and branches. How is my viscera a life cycle; how, if ever, can this make an impact.

I am an earthly dancer; I am a primal animal.
